Ryan Torino
English 10H
3/21/05

The Decline in the Preference of Classical Music in Society

I was born and raised listening to the classics, not Bach or Beethoven, but The Moody Blues and The Beach Boys. As I have matured, so has my taste in music. It has shifted from pop to metal to rap, and finally has settled on classical music. I am not completely sure how classical music has become my music of choice, but I have a good idea. In the summer between fifth and sixth grade I had a small part in a Broadway show. During this experience, I befriended a boy who was a boy soprano at the Metropolitan Opera House. When he had landed a main role, as a spirit, in the Magic Flute, he urged me to attend and invited me backstage. I became enthralled with the beautiful singing, majestic sets, and the magical story. Ever since, I have been a fan.
For more than five years, I have been formally trained in the art of opera. Recently, I have mulled over in my mind what I might do with my life, and I realized that I enjoy singing and realized that I would like nothing more than to perform. However, I have become worried about the future of opera. When you think of the crowds that attend an opera, what do you think of? Does the monopoly man come in mind, with his monocle, top hat, and cane? Well in some instances that is true, but for the most part the majority of people are senior citizens. Granted that many senior citizens go to Broadway shows, my age group enjoys most of the shows. When I discuss music with my peers, they ask me what I listen to, and my answer, opera, usually receives blank stares. I explain to them who are my favorite singers, they just smile nervously and admit they never heard of them.
When I go to see an opera with my grandparents, because my parents won’t take me, I seem to be the youngest one there by what appears one hundred years. According to a demographic I read, the average for an opera audience member was forty-eight which went up from forty-five years old from 1992 to 2002. Also, it showed that over the same period of time the percent of young adults (18-34) decreased from fourteen percent of the opera crowd to a mere eight percent. I look around and wonder how my generation, the MTV generation, will keep up the rich tradition of opera. Will the sold out crowds of four thousand seat opera houses soon dwindle? Unfortunately, I don’t know what is in store for the opera world, and I begin to think that all the hard work I have put into singing, might be for nothing. There would be no reason to perform if there is no crowd to watch. I don’t want to grow up only to find that the singing technique I studied is not of interest.
Pop music, which is portrayed on Z100 and MTV, is the antichrist to some and the savior to others. But no matter what your position, one can agree that there is a poor message in contemporary music. The music is often incoherent sentences or sexual metaphors wrapped around a techno beat. Now you may be saying “Heck I can’t understand opera either because it’s in a different language!” Even if you can’t understand the words, one can always understand the emotions composer is trying to get across in the aria, be it fear, anger, or love by either the symphony or the singer. Contemporary music appears to have no substance. It seems that some new artists are turned out on a production line. They are all blonde, beautiful, and buxom. I find it humorous that people are drawn to explicit materials, which are strategically placed by directors to make up for the lack of talent. I don’t think that people should be so easily swayed by what they are told is cool. They should broaden their horizons and decide for themselves what they enjoy after being exposed to various kinds of music.
I am not trying to force my choice of music on anyone. I would never do that because by allowing myself to experience all sorts of music I was able to find something that suits me quite well. I am unique, like a snowflake, a special little snowflake. Unfortunately, the possibility of my peers in this school becoming opera fanatics is slim to nil. Their first opera experience was their first and worst. In fifth grade at Stewart School, they were forced to go see an opera at the Metropolitan Opera House. Even though it is probably one of the best opera houses in the world, it is also a four thousand-seat theatre, and they sat in the last section. When you force ten year olds to go somewhere, then make them sit in the same place for hours on end, and compel them watch something that have no interest in, one is just asking for a disaster. In most cases if ones first experience is not a positive one will be hesitant to return. Now one may be wondering why my first experience wasn’t as bad as every one else’s, and why mine wasn’t ruined? Well, I went to a private school during this time, and I was allowed to discover opera on my own.
The preference of classical music is declining, and soon may become non-existent, and people’s uniqueness is also dwindling as they get sucked in to popular music. I think that it is important to find out who you are, and for you to develop a sense your own of identity. So in your quest to find yourself, pick up a CD filled with the classics. Not The Moody Blues or The Beach Boys, but Bach or Beethoven.

wow, so its been a long time since i've updated my journal yet again. hmmm, what's happened since november? christmas, which was normal, then my birthday which was kick ass. i turned fucking 16....kiss my ass bitches. and i got my permit! i got manikens for my birthday....yeah i know you're jealous. so then i got bored and i decided to make it look like they comitted suicide :) i love friendly thoughts. oh and at my b-day party i raped some kittens, and then robot love played. so all in all it was a pretty eventful night...and robot love is awesome.... www.robot-love.tk ..the site isnt' complete yet, but when it is, i know you'll want to go there every fucking day of your life. or maybe thats just me. then the auditions for the musical happened...i got the mayor WOOOOOOOOOOO fuck yeah. and then the rest of the casting was just really fucking bizarre, but the only way to make a situation like this right is to put lots of glue in your mouth and persist to eat the feathers from your pillow. therefore, to fix a situation like taht, i did the glue and feather thing...somehow nothing changed. but things are good cause everyone stayed with the show instead of dropping out..gotta love drama in the drama club though. and then i got the clapper as a belated gift cause caitlin sucks at ordering things online. the clapper is my new favorite appliance.
so that's pretty much it. i probably won't write in here for a long time now.

sorry, i have bee so lazy in my updating of the live journal. uggg....what a fucking week, i am so tired. well i dont really remember anything past yesterday, so i will start there. well, yesterday i had school, and i felt like shit and i was tired and really didnt want to be there. after school i had play practice and had a grand ol' time there. after school, i had to go to a sushi making class which sucked. It was three hours long and i kept like sneezing and i think i grossed everyone out. after that class i have so much more respect for the people who make it. making sushi is hard as a mother fucker. anyway when we got to eat what we made, it tasted like crap. the rice was not cooked.

today was interesting the night before, i was so sick that i really didnt bother to study for rivadue. might i say thats not a good idea. but science i had a quiz that i didnt study for but i can just copy from one of the genius freshman.anyway... next i have a studyhall where me and some seniors just yell at freshman. not really for any particular reason, but it is still fun. at third i had a vocal jazz lesson. fourthe i had more singing, fifth i had flemming, so all we did was talk, sixth i had a band lesson, and seventh(which is my lunch)was the bomb threat. so i didnt get to eat. ahhhh. so i sat outside for three hours in the blazing sun on the crappy ass wooden bleechers. which are definately not ment to hold that much weight. anyway my ass went numb after that long and i now want to beat the shit of the kid that called it in. but i got to miss a riv quiz which was good.

anyway that was my two days.

the end.

ok so i havent updated in a while.its really hard to because nothing really interesting happens during school. anyway...on monday, i had the play tryouts they went well and i got called back. there were like a million freshmen there and they all couldnt act for shit. anyway..tuesday i had a history test, an i was panking because rivadue is nuts. he picks the most randome questions and puts them on the tests. anyway, tryouts went well, and night i found out that i had the part in the play iam Dr. Bradman i dont have a huge number of lines, but there are only 2 guys inthe play and i think i should stick out because of that. on wednesday after school, i had to interview candidates for student court. everyone that showed up were like the regects of the ninth grade. so i did my best to ask them the most random questions to really make them feel akward. on thuresday i had to go to the first play practice .all we did was sit there and talk about un important shit for a good three hours. also on thuresday, i gave amanda her tounge ring. your welcome amanda. and finally today i had to do the final round of interviews. we mad this girl sing, do jumping jacks and answere questions. i think were just gonna let her on because we feel bad for her. the end

ok ive got alot to talk about. on thuresday, we had a day off from school, so i went into the city with sarah, katelin, breanne, and ashley. when we got into pen, we had to fight our way through the crowds to get to the subway. when we got to the subway, we went down like two stops until katelin told us we went to far. i knew better, but i followed her off the train. finally i told her we were about 3 miles from where we want to be,china town. we ended up in the east village and we went into some really wierd tibetan stores. i got a kickass winter hat that is made of yak hair. then we went past a crowd of transvesites and i got some funny pics. the we walked past alot of sex shops and we took more pics. when we finally got to china town, we realized that there was nothing there that we really wanted to see. so from ther ewe went to a kickass italian restaurant and had lunch. for about two hours we shopped and got more useless crap. it was really funny, some indian guy was trying to sell us bongs. then as we were walking to nyu, we saw a tatoo polar, and we went in and i got a fake toung ring and katelin got a fake nose ring. from ther we went to nyu and pretended to be students wich was awsome. as we were walking from nyu to penn. to go home, a guy asked us if we were the people go on fuse so we lied to him , and we got to go on daily download. which was awsome!!! and that was my thuresday. over the weekendi went to pennsylvania to go scuba diving. however, because of the hurricane i didnt get to go diving so basically i took a 3 hour car trip for nothing

the end.

I managed not to put off reading my books until the last possiable moment. and still i did not read them. on saturday i decided that i would put off my work again. but when sunday came, i buckled down and read all that sparknotes had to offer on my books. for about five hours i stared blankly at the screne and tried to comprehend the information. when monday came i was panacking and i was sure i would fail. anyway i wont keep you in suspense i got a 108. that right fuckers i am genius. at least i like to think so. i feel really bad though because people who actually read the books didn't do so hotsie totsie. after school i went to vocal jazz auditions. from ther ei went to the eye doctor who told me i that my perscription didnt change even though i cant see shit. and then she dialated my eyes so i couldnt go out in the sun. horay. and that was my past couple of days.

the end.

hmm...lets see. yesterday was the first friday of the year. the day went quick enough. after school i went to rivadue extra help. i got like seven points added to the summer reading test. however, i think a seven is the grade i am gonna get. i must have attempted to answere 30 questions and got only 7. ahhh. and apparentsly the questions are going to be more indepth on the test. after that i went to the eye doctor place and i picked out a new pair of glasses because i couldnt find my other ones. i did pretty much did nothing after that until amanda came over. when she came over i greeted her in the driveway and i talked to her mom for like 20 minuets. when we got in the house, we got some popcorn and put cruel intentions in the dvd player. amanda was really pissed because the brother and sister didn't fuck. according to amanda a deal is a deal. then we watched some show on pregnant mothers.

oh yea and snaps for that louis kid for running around the lunch room in a bra and fish net shirt

the end

the night before school started i couldn't sleep. i was not nervous nor did i really care that i was returning. for some reason i slept for approximatly five minuets. sleeping for such a short period of time makes you day kinda crappy. my dad got me to school like 20 min. early, and i spent the time wandering the halls and talking to friends. when i arrived at my first period, i was pretty fucking pissed off becaus i am the only sophmore in that class. incase you were wondering its bio honors. after a double period of that, i went to math. once againg i am the only sophmore in my class. akward for me no? my next class was chamber chior and it rocked. that was my favorite class last year and i hope that shall continue. from there i went to english with fleming and she was pretty awsome she gave us a period to write a paragraph about a crayon. my next class was spanish will be alot easier without pantin. if any of you have her... may god bless you for she is the most evil of teachers. the is lucifer on earth. she lives on the flesh of the living and sucks the life out of the innocent. anyway then i had lunch which i spent at many a table, i am trying to find a proper place to sit. next i had rivadue whose class i am sure to fail. he listed off all sorts of countries and we had to tell him the capitals. some how everyone but me knew the answeres. i am gonna blame my lack of knowledge on stratis. then i had wind ensamble where i didnt do anything. macran rox even though he took my cell phone. when i got home my mom told me that i was going to the u.s. open. then i told her i really didnt want to go, but apparently i was the one who told her i wanted to go. however, to my recalection she was the one screaming and holding me down on the computer making me get her tickets. whatever. when we got there my mom just bitcched alot becasue we had to walk and apparently walking is to difficult for her. for what reason i dont know. when we go there, we bought a bottle of water for ten dollars then had some food.we went to our seats which were in bumble fuck and got ready for the match it was serena williams vs. jennifer capriati. the match was good but serena got her ass haded to her, her freakishly large ass i might add. it was pretty funny serena played in boots, a jean skirt, and a jean jacket. who the hell can play tennis in that. the match went on forever and i didnt really care enough to stay to watch andy roddick(the defending champion) play. i got home really late and at that time i had to put my books and binders together and went to sleep at like 12:30.

the end.

Yesterday i hd to have lunch with my grandmother who proably dosent remember that we even had lunch. i had to set up all the crap for outside so i could spend some heart filled moments with my family. well that got boring fast, so boring that the only way that i could think of a way to get out of the house was to go to the library. I got ther and i looked for the movies of the books i read. i found all quiet on the western front and i decided to check out. when i was on my way to check out, i saw jeanine ippolito(i suck at spelling) and we talked for a bit, and her mom decided that i was best for her to go over my house and watch the movie. when we were on our way out we saw mrs. olivo and talked to her for atleast 30 min. well when we got back to my house and we turned on the movie. that movie sucked. i could have sworn that all quiet on the western front was a gay porno from the 1930's. so we just made fun of it for 2 hours and i dont think i got anything out of that experience. the next day (aka today) i did jack shit for the beginning of the day. but when 4 o'clock rolled around, it was time to get my hair dyed and cut. that was easily the most metro moment of my life!!!so i sat in the chair while the lady tried to tell me what she was gonna do. i just said yes to everything she said, and before i knew it i had tin foil in my hair and a shower cap on. that was ok what was really bad was sitting in those heat thingies. All the old women were sitting there reading wedding books and staring at me. ahhh!!! so fucking akward!!!. when i was all done it looked good. then she took out the scisors and took like all of my hair off. i was fucking freaking out. now my hair can't wobble from side to side. but i restrained and didnt flip at shit at the lady. my parents decided that they really didnt want pick me up, and they came like a 1/2 hour. after the salon closed i might add. when i got in the car and yelled at them for a couple of minuets and then i was told that we were going for lobstars with annother family. my father and i drove out like an hour to get lobstars. when we got there there was a really long line, half way around the block. so we decided that we would go inside to get lobstars. we had to wait like an hour for the food to get cooked and by that time i had the delicious stench of dead fish tatooed on my skin. ewww. by the time i got home it was dark and the great idea of a cook out was pretty much ruined.

the end.

today like my title suggests, i watched many a movie. a woke up about 11 and my mom went out to lunch with her friends. during this time i watched both of the kill bill volumes. I found them to be quite good no matter how gory they were as most of quintin terintino's movies are. when my mother came home i assured that i read and that i was almost finished with my book. haha right. I gave up on my summer reading. well shorty after my mother arrive home we had to rush out to the othodontist where he told me i was ready for braces. dont worry wont have metal in my mouth, i am getting the invisaline. um... from there we went to blockbuster to return the movies we bought cruel intentions. later that night i would have to got to a mission trip reunion which i really didnt want to go to. my mom thought it necessary to buy all of the leaders gifts. we got the men gift cards and the women flowers. but when i showed up for the "party" half of the leaders didnt show up, and now i have like fifty dollars to blockbuster. well, the reunion was nice and i had a good time talking to everyone. When it was all done with, i came home and watched cruel intentions with my mom, which was a little akward. cruel intentions is like the saddest movie in my book. oh well.

the end

today i got my schedual from the school, seventh peroid lunch, and went to get food at bistro. after i read for a bit until denby called and wanted me to go into town again. I walked there and we decided to go orchid for dinner. when we were finished there we walked to tcby and saw jenny cohn and allie rotundo(g). jenny was babysitting a baby with gigantic ears who plays with cell phones. after a long conversation, jenny abandoned us. Sarah, ashley and i went to payhalf and walked around taking pictures. when that became boring we walked to my house. we talked for about an hour and put pix on sarah's livejournal. amanda halvorsen came over and the party began. My parents left, and we decided to make brownies. fun fun! during that time we went up to my room and the four of us hung out there until the brownies were done. after the brownie were done we blasted the music and danced around.we rocked to geen day, scotty dosent know (eurotrip) and fuck her gently(tenacious d) that went on for about an hour. then we went back to my room and they saw that i had a livestrong bracelet. when i told them they could have it they freaked out. they started fighting over it and literally beating eachother. Sarah tried to hide it in her bra, but that didn't and the other girls got it back. the the fight moved out side as amanda got it and ran down my street then denby got it and was tackled in my driveway by amanda and ashly. Denby continued to scream "rape!" at the top of her lungs to try to get people off of her. this went on for annother 20 minuets. then all of them left around 10 oclock

I was woken up by my mom screaming at me to "get out of bed we have to leave in fifteen minuets" i had no idea what the fuck she was talking about. i soon found out that we were to go to the city to see a play. uggg, just what i wanted to do first thing in the morning. well, when we got to the train my mother and i met up with annother family. when we arrived in penn. station, i found out that no one i was with could navigate themselves in the city. Ryan to the rescue. luckily i am not an idiot, and i can get myself around the city. so i tok them on the subway, and we came out right infront of the play-house. we saw the play 42nd street. go damn that play sucked ass. two and half hours of tap dancing. who the fuck can sit through that. not to mention that the guy next to me had major body odor problems. ewww. when the play was over my mother and i split up with the family we were with and we visited a cousin who worked in the theatre right next to the show we just saw. when she was done giving us a tour of the play-house she worked in, my mother and i went on our merry way. we called the family we went in with to try and meet up again, but they had no intention of meeting up with us. we were right accross the street from madame tuddsos wax museum and we decided to go on a tour. it was pretty cool. i got in trouble for feeling up marilyn monroe. it was worth it. hehehe. after like two hours in there we left and went home.

It did not make for a very interesting game. Alot of other crap happened, but you realy dont need to know about it. when i got home around three, i did nothing until i had to go "hang out" with amandas younger brothe again. I watched him play video games for four hours until he had to go to sleep. When i was getting ready to leave, amanda showed up and we went to seventh street. WE walked around the street to the library and though the G.C. hotel. for some reason walk ing through the hotel freaked amanda out.it was funny. from there we walked to the orchid and got food. it was one of the most random things ive ever done,10:30 at night and we had a late night craving. from worchid amanda and I walked to my house where my parents drove her home.

THE END.

I havent up-dated in two days so, this is what has happened. on thuresday, i didnt do anything the entire morning. Later in the day i went to a SAT tutor. I have been going there for two years my mom is crazy. After that i went to the americana mall with my mother to get some "back to school clothes" that was ever so much fun. when i was done shopping, i realized that i was late for my SCUBA diving class. So i got there a few minuets late, filled my O2 tanks and went to the eisenhower(i suck at spelling) park. I sat tweenty feet under water for two hours damn that was cold the water is like 60 degrees. then on friday i went to a singing lesson in massepequa. My mom got lost like ten times on the way there and she get pissed off when she gets lost, and i was the only person for her to take it out on. that night i had to go to the halversons and "hang out" aka baby sit amands little brother which was pretty cool. I have no problem wit watching t.v., playing video games then getting paid for it. Mr. halvorsen drove me home because my parents werent home so basically i watched law and order for two hours until they came home.

today i woke up and listened to howard stern till i decided to get my fat ass out of bed. From there i watched t.v. until my mother told me i had to read. i knew that i had to get out of the house so that i didnt have to read that crap. I called everyong i knew and found that atkinson was just going downtown to meet up with some friends. We ate some pizza at g.c.pizza and walked around accomplishing nothing. We went to pay half which has really cool ghetto clothes. from ther we walked her friend to her job. It was rite accross the street from sears, and we went there for like 20 minuets. From there i walked her home where we met her sister and mother. Atkinsons sister was going to the librerary and i walked her there. when wwe arrived, jessica(katelin's little sister) we saw colleen spain wh just happens to work there. that is easily the coolest job in the world. i mean you got all those single widowed women hanging around. anyway, i saw cotten-balls reading a Dr. Seaus book i took a couple of pictures of him on my phone, and I got the hell out of ther because he saw me do it. i did nothing until my mother tole me i was taking scuba lessons which was really random. the class was so easy, if you took earch science you can scuba dive. However, the pool was a different story. I was fucking cold as hell. I dont really have much fat to keep me warm, all 125 lbs. of me. I still have no idea what lbs. means. anyway...when i was done, my father picked me up, and i went to a restaurant where he was eating dinner with some friends. and......

SCOTTY DOSENT KNOW!!
